玻璃钢（FRP）亦称作GRP，即纤维强化塑料，一般指用玻璃纤维增强不饱和聚脂、环氧树脂与酚醛树脂基体。以玻璃纤维或其制品作增强材料的增强塑料，称谓为玻璃纤维增强塑料，或称谓玻璃钢。由于所使用的树脂品种不同，因此有聚酯玻璃钢、环氧玻璃钢、酚醛玻璃钢之称。质轻而硬，不导电，机械强度高，回收利用少，耐腐蚀。可以代替钢材制造机器零件和汽车、船舶外壳等

采用玻璃钢复合材料的概念是指一种材料不能满足使用要求，需要由两种或两种以上的材料复合在一起，组成另一种能满足人们要求的材料，即复合材料。例如，单一种玻璃纤维，虽然强度很高，但纤维间是松散的，只能承受拉力，不能承受弯曲、剪切和压应力，还不易做成固定的几何形状，是松软体。如果用合成树脂把它们粘合在一起，可以做成各种具有固定形状的坚硬制品，既能承受拉应力，又可承受弯曲、压缩和剪切应力。这就组成了玻璃纤维增强的塑料基复合材料。
The concept of FRP is that a material can't meet the requirement of application. It needs two or more than two kinds of materials to form another material that can meet people's requirements, that is composite material. For example, a single type of glass fiber, though high in intensity, is loose in fiber. It can only bear tensile force, can not bear bending, shearing and compressive stress, and is not easy to make fixed geometry. It is loose software. If they are bonded together with synthetic resins, they can be made into various hard products with fixed shape, which not only can bear tensile stress, but also can endure bending, compression and shearing stress. This makes up a glass fiber reinforced plastic matrix composite.
